Falls Church, VA—During the final week of June, IBA leaders Julie Olson, Cleveland Cooke, and Barrett Mitchell traveled to Tampa to volunteer their time and service at the 2019 Department of Defense (DoD) Warrior Games. Founded in 2010, the DoD Warrior Games is an international adaptive multi-sport event showcasing the determination and athletic accomplishments of wounded, ill, and injured warriors. This year’s games featured about 300 service members and veterans representing the U.S. Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, and Special Operations Command (SOCOM). International teams from the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Canada also participated.
IBA volunteers supported and cheered on athletes in a range of sports—including archery, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby, and seated volleyball—in addition to assisting with logistical tasks such as greeting participants, scoring the games, and providing water to competitors.
“It was truly inspiring to witness the level of friendly competition and camaraderie among these athletes from different military branches and countries,” said Barrett Mitchell, IBA’s Military Health Account Manager. “It’s easy to see the tremendous impact that the teams and adaptive sports play in the athletes’ lives.”
Adaptive sports not only help with warriors’ physical recovery and rehabilitation but have become a key component in promoting wellness and emotional healing. IBA volunteers were fortunate to spend some time serving meals and talking to many military family members about their experiences.
